Alioth is a vase in Murano glass, designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1983 and named after a star in Ursa Major. A yellow cup-shaped mouth sits on a stack of blue glass with spiralling threads, over a green, textured foot. The vase is 48 cm high with a diameter of 18 cm.
It is made by hand with traditional Murano techniques, so form and colour differ slightly from piece to piece. Memphis counts such differences as part of its artisanal production. Memphis describes each of its pieces as the result of long handwork, in which the craftsmen handle every surface many times as it is made.
