California is a rug designed by Nathalie Du Pasquier in 1983. Du Pasquier was among the young designers who met at Ettore Sottsass's home in Milan in December 1980, and in 1983 she designed several Memphis rugs, among them California, Arizona and Riviera.
The rug is made of 100% Tibetan wool and knotted by hand on a traditional loom. It measures 250 × 180 cm. Hand-knotting means that size, colour and pile can differ slightly from rug to rug, which Memphis counts as part of artisanal production.
In its 2025 catalogue, Back to New, Memphis Milano returns to the collections of 1981 to 1986 and presents their pieces afresh.
