Imperial is a secretaire designed by Shiro Kuramata in 1981. Kuramata, one of the Japanese designers who took part in Memphis, drew it as a tall, narrow piece: 35 cm wide, 40 cm deep and 150 cm high.
It is made of open-pore lacquered wood, a lacquer that leaves the grain of the wood perceptible. The secretaire comes in three colours: Black, Silver and Plum. The lacquer is applied by hand in Italy, so small differences in colour and surface from piece to piece are part of the process.
The founding group itself lasted only a short time, but its pieces remain part of the Memphis Milano catalogue today.
