Memphis began in Milan in December 1980, when Ettore Sottsass gathered a group of young architects and designers around him, among them Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, George J. Sowden, Martine Bedin, Marco Zanini and Aldo Cibic. Their first collection, shown in Milan in September 1981, set bright colours, printed laminates and unexpected shapes against the restraint of modernist furniture: bookcases such as Carlton that stand like figures, lamps such as Tahiti, tables, ceramics and glass. The group disbanded in 1988, and its pieces became a reference point for postmodern design.

Memphis Milano still produces the original designs in Italy, together with later editions. Each piece is made by hand in Italian workshops, from laminate-covered furniture to ceramics and Murano glass, so small differences in colour and surface are part of the result. Today Memphis Milano belongs to Italian Radical Design, alongside Gufram and Meritalia.
